Check Engine Light

The check engine light is located on the dashboard and it illuminates when a failure or fault is detected in the ECU or brain box.

No Issues Detected

(2) Blink Once

Encountered a fault but is not yet a failure.

(4) Flashing

Stop the vehicle immediately, otherwise component(s) in the engine or powertrain will be severely damaged. Take your vehicle to a technician/mechanic immediately.

On-board diagnostics (OBD)

On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) is the ability of a vehicle to self-diagnose itself, monitor its core components, and report on the diagnostic information retrieved from the vehicle’s subsystems. The volume of diagnostic information available in an OBD System is largely dependent on the vehicle manufacturer. However, with respect to the implementation of the OBD2 standard in 1996, a standardized digital communication port is required to provide a set of standardized data in addition to a standard set of Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Port

The OBD port in a vehicle is usually located under the steering wheel. The capabilities and locations as well as the connector and its pinout have been standardized. There are 16 pins in total and one of the pins provides power from the battery to the check engine device when plugged in. Check Engine uses the Type A connector as shown below:

Benefits of OBDII

The OBD2 Systems monitor the vehicle’s emission control system and other subsystems that supports the vehicles core functioning. It was initially designed for emissions and has grown to a more diagnostic and data driven system.

The OBD2 systems has the capabilities of notifying the driver of a problem using the malfunction indicator light (MIL) as described above. Additional information is also stored in the different services the OBD2 system provides. The system aids in early and timely diagnosis  which has numerous benefits that include fuel economy improvement, better air quality, improved safety, prevention of major repair costs and many more.

One Time Setup

The check engine setup process begins by purchasing the check Engine Device, pairing the device to an Android device, downloading the check Engine Android application from google play, registering and authenticating the App instance to the device. When this is done, the check engine solution can then be used on multiple vehicle.
